Field Report: MenCare Sessions Transforming Gender Attitudes

Gender Equity Team7 April 2026

Our Gender Equity team reports from the field on MenCare sessions that are changing how men in Moyamba and Waterloo understand masculinity, care, and respect for women.

Sustainable change in gender dynamics requires engaging men and boys — not just working with women. LEWAF's MenCare Program, a cornerstone of our Gender Equity work, has been running structured sessions with men in Moyamba and Waterloo that challenge harmful attitudes and promote positive, caring masculinity.

MenCare sessions are facilitated by trained community educators and create safe spaces for men to discuss topics like domestic violence, shared household responsibilities, child care, and healthy relationships. The program draws on evidence-based curriculum adapted for the Sierra Leonean context.

What Participants Are Saying

"I used to think the way I treated my wife was normal. Now I understand that respect is the foundation of a good family." — MenCare participant, Moyamba

Field reports from our team in Moyamba show that communities where MenCare has operated are seeing reduced domestic conflict, increased cooperation between spouses, and more women reporting that they feel supported by their husbands to participate in savings groups and community activities.
